Why Actuaries Build Better Insurance AI

Most insurance AI platforms are built by software engineers who learned insurance along the way. They read the textbooks. They talked to brokers. They studied the workflows. But there is a difference between understanding insurance intellectually and understanding it experientially.

An actuary who has spent years pricing insurance products brings a fundamentally different perspective to building AI. They understand not just what data appears on a submission, but why it matters. They know which factors drive loss frequency, which drive severity, and how carriers actually make underwriting decisions.

This matters for three reasons. First, data extraction is not just about reading text. It is about understanding context. When an AI reads a submission, it needs to know which fields are critical for pricing, which are critical for underwriting, and which are informational. An actuary builds that understanding into the system.

Second, carrier matching requires understanding risk appetite at a granular level. It is not enough to know that a carrier writes general liability. You need to know their comfort with specific class codes, geographic preferences, loss ratio thresholds, and minimum premium requirements. This is the kind of knowledge that comes from years of working inside the pricing function.

Third, policy comparison requires understanding what coverage gaps actually mean. A 95% sublimit versus a 90% sublimit is not just a number difference. It has real implications for the insured's coverage in a loss scenario. Building AI that flags meaningful differences (rather than all differences) requires actuarial judgment.

This is why Admin Zero's CTO is a Fellow of the Actuarial Society with senior pricing experience at a leading multinational insurer. Not because credentials look good on a website, but because that experience makes the AI better.
